Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare, disabling, and potentially fatal disorder whose diagnosis is confounded by nonspecific symptoms that may suggest numerous and more common conditions. Misdiagnoses, which occur in half of patients with HAE, lead to delays in treatment and the use of ineffective and potentially risky interventions. Since 2008, the introduction of specific new treatments for HAE has been credited with revitalizing management efforts and achieving both acute and prophylactic treatment goals. In this CE/CME activity, NPs and PAs will learn about strategies for early diagnosis and use of these effective new treatments.

After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Distinguish the symptoms of HAE from those of more common forms of angioedema
- Identify the etiology of, symptoms of, and diagnostic standards for HAE in order to facilitate early and accurate diagnosis
- Describe strategies for prevention of HAE episodes and new medication options for acute care management
