Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is often misdiagnosed or unrecognized in clinical practice, delaying treatment options that can improve outcomes and prolong life. This case-based activity for NPs and PAs reviews the symptoms and signs of PAH, the need for early referral to specialist care, current therapies and treatment strategies, and the monitoring and counseling that NPs and PAs should employ when following patients with PAH in primary care.

- Identify symptoms and signs of PAH in order to prompt early recognition of patients who should be referred for specialist evaluation and care
- Review current therapeutic regimens for the management of PAH according to the patient’s evolving disease stage
- Describe monitoring requirements for PAH medications and counseling topics for patients regarding self-care and the importance of medication adherence
