Finding the “One”: Individualizing Diabetes Management with GLP-1 Receptor Agonists

More than 34 million Americans are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and more than one half fail to achieve guideline-recommended glycemic goals, exposing them to excessive risk for T2D complications. People with T2D have a 2- to 4-fold higher risk of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality and are more likely to have factors that increase atherosclerotic CV disease risk—including hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity. The glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) combine robust glucose-lowering efficacy with extraglycemic benefits including weight loss, significant reductions in CV events, and renal benefits for select agents, making them an attractive option for management of patients with T2D. Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Describe the mechanism of action of GLP-1 RAs as it relates the pathophysiology and progression of T2D

  • Differentiate among the GLP-1 RAs based on dosing, administration, and glycemic and extraglycemic effects

  • Apply guideline recommendations, cardiovascular and/or renal risk factors, and patient preferences to select GLP-1 RAs for appropriate patients early in the treatment of T2D

  • Incorporate strategies to manage the adverse events associated with GLP-1 RAs to promote adherence
