In the United States, chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) occurs mostly among immigrants from areas with HBV prevalence ≥2% and among people whose parents were born in such areas or who are in close contact with infected individuals. Vaccination for HBV and screening to ensure appropriate management of chronic infection are key to reducing morbidity and mortality, but many barriers stand in the way of doing so, including language barriers and cultural beliefs. This activity provides a guide for HBV prevention, strategies for a culturally sensitive approach to patients, and recommendations for optimizing treatment and long-term management.

- Initiate culturally competent discussions with patients regarding sexual health, high-risk behaviors, and prevention of HBV
