As understanding of its underlying pathophysiology has deepened, the fact that obesity is a disease—and not a personal failing—has been incorporated into guidelines and medical language. Both the American Medical Association and American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recognize obesity as a disease characterized by multiple pathophysiologic aspects and requiring a range of interventions for treatment and prevention. Incretin-based treatment for obesity has become an area of keen interest in recent years. An understanding of the metabolic underpinnings of obesity coupled with knowledge of current and emerging incretin-based therapies will assist healthcare professionals in successful treatment of patients with obesity over the long term. This activity provides expert insights about available and emerging treatment advances for obesity that will help patients achieve long-term weight loss and associated health benefits.
