Immuno-oncology has emerged as a game-changing array of cancer therapies that harness the patient’s own immune system to eliminate malignant cells. Immune checkpoint inhibitors target crucial pathways involved in the pathogenesis of malignancies. This online activity explains the biology of the immune system as it pertains to malignancies and explores the mechanisms of action of the checkpoint inhibitors; presents recent trial data on their safety and efficacy; and discusses strategies to mitigate and manage the adverse events and toxicities associated with checkpoint inhibitor therapy.
