Immune checkpoint inhibitors can be considered one of the most important developments in cancer therapy in the past decade, with indications for their use continuing to expand across malignancies and disease settings. The growing use of checkpoint inhibitors offers patients hope for improved outcomes, but also brings with it novel immune-related adverse events (irAEs) that are temporally and symptomatically different from those seen with standard chemotherapy and targeted agents. This program discusses the various immune checkpoint inhibitors and provides strategies for improving the recognition and management of irAEs as well as educating patients and their caregivers about these novel therapies.
