Talking About Pain Doesn’t Have to Be Painful: Communication Strategies to Talk With Patients About Pain Medicine and Opioid Use Disorder

PDF

Pain is surrounded by stigma. Because of its invisible nature, patients need additional support to feel validated and reassured that the pain is not “all in their head” or due to “lazy muscles.” It is up to the healthcare professional to set the stage for an open, empathetic relationship that allows patients to fully disclose how they are feeling and trust that their provider is going to be their advocate and part of their support system. This PDF resource provides tips from both patients and healthcare professionals for effectively communicating with and educating patients with pain and/or opioid use.
