Dry Eye Disease: Steps to More Effective Management

Dry eye disease (DED), also known as dysfunctional tear syndrome or dry eye syndrome, is a common condition often seen in primary care offices. In this activity, clinicians will learn from 2 illustrative cases how to recognize the symptoms of DED, determine its causes, recommend optimal treatments for relieving the most bothersome symptoms, and know when to refer patients to an eye care specialist.

Target Audience

NPs and PAs who care for patients with dry eye disease

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify patients with DED based on risk factors and symptoms

  • Initiate first-line treatment for managing DED, including pharmacologic options and strategies to support adherence and lifestyle changes
