The key goal of schizophrenia management is reducing risk of relapse. To do so, clinicians need to be able to choose among the various available treatment options to determine which agent will be most effective and tolerable for individual patients. Also of importance are strategies to assess and discuss adherence challenges with patients. In this series of 3 Medical Minutes, Leslie Citrome, MD, MPH provides an overview of schizophrenia and current treatment guidelines, clinical pearls for enhancing medication adherence, and qualities to consider among the currently available pharmacotherapies. At the end of each Medical Minute, he is joined by psychiatric nurse practitioner Amber Hoberg for a brief interprofessional discussion on managing patients with schizophrenia.
